What's the real story behind your favorite Tiger players?

Here are a few little-known facts about some of our Detroit Tiger Players:

I'll bet you didn't know that one of the most beloved Detroit Tiger players to ever wear the Old English D, the best pinch-hitter ever, Gates Brown's real name is William? Seems the Gator got his handle after he got into a bit of trouble as a lad. A stint in the local pokey gave his buddies reason to talk about his being "behind the Gates." A far cry from what he became, as our friend Ernie Harwell called him, "The Pride of Crestline, Ohio."

..or that Mickey Lolich, famous for winning 3 games for the 1968 World Series champs, was really a right hander? The Mick injured his arm when a motorcycle fell on it as a small kid out in Oregon so he taught himself to pitch with the other. Maybe that's why he could go over 300 innings 4 times in his career when these bums today are lucky to go 200! .... and WHY ISN'T HE IN THE HALL OF FAME?

...or that a certain rightfielder was known for turning down his $100,000 contract because he felt he didn't deserve it?... Well--would you believe he really didn't need the money as we now know that he was a master chemist who made a fortune on the batteries he named after himself?... Well that may be a stretch, but there are a lot more interesting things about Al Kaline other than his supercharged name!
