It took a while, but Comerica Park...
...is finally making some of its own traditions and memories!
Comerica Park knows it's not easy following a legend... just ask Rick Rizz and Bob Rathbun- remember them??.. the Ernie and Paul replacements? The Tigers' new den must have felt the same way when it opened its gates in April of 2000... Tiger Stadium was not an easy act to follow, no matter how good you were... and a lot of people were ready to dislike the new place- named after a bank and all...
...and it wasn't easy for Comerica Park... the Tigers had hoped to follow the Cleveland Indians' model of bringing along young talent and having it become very good just in time for the new ballpark... and then to capitalize on the park, the team and build on all that... ...but... it didn't quite happen that way, did it? Right from the beginning, guys like Juan Gonzalez and Bobby Higginson griped and complained about how big the place was... "only park bigger than this is Yellowstone, that kind of stuff- and the Tigers really didn't design those early teams very well for such a big yard- some of the old mentality hanging on, we guess. The team simply wasn't up to major league standards when the ballpark opened (and they got a LOT worse)... that was simply the biggest sin. If the Tigers were competitive, there would have been a lot less griping and comparisons to Tiger Stadium ... as it was, it took a long time for fans to warm up to the new place...hmmm... probably seemed to occur right around 2006! We'll take a look at the brief history of Comerica, check out some of the highlights... I think they all pretty much occurred in 2006... maybe find some trivia and little -known facts about the place.
And we'll go on a little guided tour of the place with pictures and our take on its features and allll those Tiger heads! Comerica Park is really a very good ballpark. Todd Jones made a pretty good comparison when he likened Tiger Stadium to a cup, and Comerica Park to a saucer! Our boy Jonesy sure can turn a phrase, right?
The big scoreboard welcomes fans to Game 4 of the 2006 ALCS... remember how that ended?
...and just before the beginning of that Game 4
