The 1940 World Series features the Detroit Tigers who have broken the Yankees...
... pennant streak. The 1940 World Series finds the Reds eager to avenge their embarrassing 1939 sweep... and they're a good team, winning 100 times. The Tigers had unseated the powerhouse Yankees with the G-Man combo and great pitching.
World Series Preview: Even though the Reds had been skunked by the Yankees in '39, this was still a pretty darn good ballclub... no shame in losing to that powerhouse Bomber outfit last year, but the Reds went on a tear in '40... winning 100 games. That was always an accomplishment back in the day of 154 game schedule... but the Tigers were no slouch... this was still a Greenberg-Gehringer team with Rudy York and Bobo Newsome, Tommy Bridges and Schoolboy Rowe toeing the slab... and winning a tough 3 team pennant race with the Tribe and the Yanks. Looks to be a darn good evenly-matched series... so close even Pete Rose wouldn't put a bet down on it!

Game 5 at Detroit- Detroit 8 Cincinnati 0- Newsome dedicates this shutout to his father as Greenberg goes deep. Detroit leads series 3-2. Game 6 at Cincinnati- Cincinnati 4 Detroit 0- Reds' pitcher Bucky Walters homers and tosses a shutout. 1940 World Series tied 3-3.
Game 7 at Cincinnati- Cincinnati 2 Detroit 1- Newsome on only one day rest is tough, but can't quite get it done. Cincinnati wins 1940 World Series 4-3.
World Series Wrapup: Despite Bobo Newsome's emotional heroics, the Tigers fell just short of beating a great Cincinnati team. Outfielder Bruce Campbell was a big surprise, hitting .360 to lead the team, leading Greenberg, of course at .357. Newsome and Tommy Bridges pitched well, but sub par series' by Schoolboy Rowe and Dizzy Trout really hurt the team.
