The 1934 World Series featured two legendary teams in a fight...

...to the finish. The 1934 World Series promised to be a barn-burner... the "Gas House Gang" Cards of Dizzy Dean, Daffy Dean, Joe Medwick and Leo Durocher were making their 5th series appearance in 9 years, while the Tigers blazed through the American League, winning a very impressive 101 games.

World Series Preview:
The Cardinals were cocky... brash... loud... confident. And they may have had a right to be. Most of the "smart" money had come down on their side- they'd survived a tough pennant race, led their league in hitting and had the last 30 game winner- Dizzy Dean- until Denny McLain would turn the trick for the Tigers some 34 years later.

... but no one was looking for a rout... Detroit's G-Men were more than ready for what already looked like a classic!

Game 1 at Detroit- St. Louis 8 Detroit 3- Greenberg homers, but Crowder gets crowned. YIKES- 5 errors don't help the Bengals' cause. St. Louis leads series 1-0.

Game 2 at Detroit- Detroit 3 St. Louis 2 - Schoolboy Rowe pitches all 12 innings- they did that in those days- and Goose Goslin singles in the winning run. 1934 World Series tied 1-1.

Game 3 at St. Louis- St. Louis 4 Detroit 1 - Cardinals score in the 2nd and 3rd... they lead all the way behind Paul "Daffy" Dean.
St. Louis leads series 2-1.

Game 4 at St. Louis- Detroit 10 St. Louis 4 - Greenberg smacks 4 hits, 3 RBIs as underhander Elden Auker goes all the way- who didn't back then? 1940 World Series tied 2-2.

Game 5 at St. Louis- Detroit 3 St. Louis 1 - Greenberg smacks 4 hits, 3 RBIs as Charlie Gehringer's 2 run homer and Tommy Bridges' pitching are enough to handle big mouth Dizzy! Detroit leads series 3-2.

Game 6 at Detroit- St. Louis 4 Detroit 3 - Paul Dean bats and pitches the Cardinals past a battling Schoolboy Rowe 1934 World Series tied 3-3.

Game 7 at Detroit- St. Louis 11 Detroit 0 - A 7 run 3rd inning chases Elden Auker as the Cardinals romp. A hard slide by Joe "Ducky-Wucky" Medwick injures Tiger 3rd sacker Marv Owen and the fans retaliate by throwing garbage at him until he's removed from the game- by that time, it's too late. St. Louis wins 1934 World Series 4-3.

World Series Wrapup:
Well this one really hurt... coming home with two chances to win one... no wonder the Tiger fans were so frustrated in Game 7 when the Cards piled it on. I'm a little surprised that they threw only fruit, vegetables and trash... given Detroit's status as the motor city, why not a few car batteries... sail a few hubcaps... chuck a couple of bumpers??

Anyway, they still played well- until the last game- against a very good opponent. Gehringer and Greenberg, of course, led the way with the sticks, batting .379 and .321. WAIT 'TIL NEXT YEAR!!!
