The 1907 World Series gives us a first time AL pennant winner facing a team which is looking to avenge...

...a bitter defeat. The 1907 World Series brought Detroit's first American League champion against a Chicago Cubs team which had won a record 116 games in 1906, but LOST the series to their bitter cross-town rivals, the "hitless wonders"... the White Sox. This 1907 team was just about as good, winning 106 games, and finishing a whopping 17 games ahead.

World Series Preview:
That storyline was the major theme in the days preceding the '07 Fall Classic... could Chicago avenge the embarrassing loss of 1906?

Detroit's brilliant youngster, Ty Cobb led the Bengals behind the solid pitching of Wild Bill Donovan and Ed Killian each of whom had won 20 games. Another big bat was swung by Sam Crawford who was the league's big power hitter.

Chicago relied on the pitching of Orval Overall and Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown, who really did have only three fingers on his pitching hand due to a farm machinery accident, and the famous double play combo of "Tinkers to Evers to Chance." The oddsmakers favored Chicago... would they be right?

Game 1 at Chicago- Chicago 3 Detroit 3- Ninth inning heartbreak for Bill Donovan as 2 Tiger errors allow 2 Chicago runs to tie it up. The game goes 12 before darkness sets in and it's declared a tie. 7 Chicago steals set the tone for the series. Series tied 0-0-1.

Game 2 at Chicago- Chicago 3 Detroit 1- Tiger bats start their series long snooze as Wabash George Mullin gets almost no support. Chicago leads series 1-0-1.

Game 3 at Chicago- Chicago 5 Detroit 1- Ed Killian last only 4 innings as Chicago leads all the way... only 6 hits for the Bengals in this one. Chicago leads series 2-0-1.

Game 4 at Detroit- Chicago 6 Detroit 1- 2 errors by shortstop Charley O'Leary were enough to let Chicago overcome a Cobb triple and subsequent score.

"Wahoo" Sam Crawford

Chicago leads series 3-0-1.

Game 5 at Detroit- Chicago 2 Detroit 0- Chicago's Brown shuts out the Tigers. Chicago wins 1907 World Series 4-0-1.

World Series Wrapup:
Chicago played pretty much classic "inside baseball" as they stole 15 bases, bunted, and ran with abandon. Their pitching was also very good as Detroit batted .216 for the series and never scored more than 1 run in any game after the first.
